Early Treatment
What’s the “Right Age”
for Orthodontic Treatment?
Orthodontics now focuses on patients of many ages. New treatment techniques provide significant benefits for patients as young as 3 years old. With many patients, this “early treatment” during periods of rapid facial growth can simplify and even eliminate additional treatment. Early treatment can help reduce severe jaw discrepancy and possibly treatment time along with reducing the need for extraction once the permanent teeth erupt.
Full orthodontic treatment with braces is most commonly initiated at 12-13 years of age, after most of the permanent teeth are in place. These teeth can be moved to their proper positions and facial skeletal growth can be encouraged or inhibited.
